STAFF BIO:
Andy returns for his sixth year as the Director of Coaching for San Tan after committing to a long term extended contract this past year. Each year the stability and quality of the club has grown greatly working toward the goal of developing a competitive and healthy club environment. Since Andy joined in 2008 the Legacy competitve program has grown almost 100% from 25 teams to 47 teams in 2012/13. In 2012 three Legacy teams advanced to the Regional Championships and two were named Arizona State Cup Champions. He has continued to build a high level soccer program in the Legacy program through an extensive coach and player development program designed to develop "Complete Players" and a ’Total Soccer’ concept. The structure for the coaches gives them the necessary tools to develop all the players and teams per age group and a style of play that moves through the club. Along with a great group of returning Legacy coaches Andy has been able to attract the top coaches in Arizona year after year. Andy’s background includes spending his youth soccer days in the country’s hot bed of soccer Southern California, playing club soccer starting in AYSO in 1967 and college soccer at UCLA in the early 1980’s. Andy’s coaching career also started in Southern California where he coached youth club soccer, state ODP, High School, and College Division I and II before moving to the Bay Area in Northern California, where he coached at Division I University of California, Berkeley. Andy then went on to serve as the Director of Coaching for one of the top clubs in Northern California the Bay Oaks Soccer Club for 10 years before coming here to Arizona in 2008 as the Director of Coaching for San Tan.
Andy comes from a rich soccer family with a long history of playing and coaching. Andy grew up as the fourth of five kids who all played soccer for most of their lives. Andy’s two brothers also coached youth soccer teams for many years. Brother Joe Jr. went on to play professionally in the NASL with the LA Aztecs and brother Mike helped start the soccer program and played at El Camino Community College. Both sisters Michelle and Tania played soccer throughout their youth days and Michelle helped start the girls soccer program at her high school. Andy’s father Joe Sr. in 2010 was honored as a "pioneer in soccer" by the City of Torrance in LA and in 2011 was inducted into the AYSO "Hall of Fame" as one of the "pioneer fathers" of AYSO in 1964. At Penn State, Joe Sr. started as the corner back in football. Joe Sr. lettered in football, swimming, and baseball in college competition. Andy’s mother Inga grew up playing soccer for years in Germany and coached many of the top AYSO teams for years including All Star youth teams in Southern California.
